TIRTL – The Infra Red Traffic Logger
TIRTL is a world class ITS product manufactured by the patent holders M/s.CEOS Industrial Pty Ltd, Melbourne. www.ceos.com.au. TIRTL employs a pair of parallel and cross beams of Infra Red to detect break and make of the beams by the wheels of passing vehicles which are measured in accuracy of micro seconds and micro meters.
The intelligent design of TIRTL enable accurate measurement of additional parameters like chord length of tyres, trac, relative positions of wheels etc and not just the axle length as done by other products/technologies. These capabilities distinctly enabled TIRTL in tackling the chaotic typical Indian traffic flows characterised by multiple classes and lack of lane discipline.
TIRTL come with a specifically developed India specific firmware capable of classifying 20+ classes. The observed performance accuracy in typical Indian Urban traffic is >99% for count and >98% for classification. For highway traffic these are near 100%. Performance standards are guaranteed up to nine lanes, unidirectional or bidirectional, all weather, up to 250Kms of speed (accuracy >99.5%, enforcement class). TIRTL require no consumables for operations.
TIRTL also reports traffic engineering parameters such as head-way, occupancy, gap etc which was hitherto unavailable for Indian traffic. It is no wonder that scores of journal publications took place using TIRTL data by Indian academia in a short while. Many IITs, NITs, IISc etc are using TIRTL for research work. Also many highway operators swear by TIRTL performance!
